Even if nobody asked……
1. Most wanted list: the person who created “I need to let you go” as a prompt to end a phone call. Let me go? Was I tied up? Held captive? Did I say I needed to go? Aren’t you the one saying YOU need to go? Don’t put the end of your attention span on me. My little life goal is to immediately hang up on the next person who says those words to me. Right away. That second. I’ll let you know how it works out.
2. People who do great things don’t get a lot done every day. They get SOMETHING done, rather than NOTHING done every day.
3. Ever notice that TV cops dispatch orders in rapid fire to everyone around them and no one ever asks for clarification, pushes back on the order, needs additional information, anything? They just march off to do it. I’m calling BS on this. If you’ve ever been a “boss” you tell me how likely that is. The range will be from never to NEVER!
4. “The older I get, the better I was”.
5. “Dean, you have an incredibly high PAIN tolerance but, man, you have an unbelievably low INCONVENIENCE tolerance.” – Trish Harrington. Truer words may never have been spoken. Unfortunately.
6. Chris Stapleton sings on stage with his wife. Good deal. At last week’s ACM Awards he performed “Think I’m In Love With You” with Dua Lipa singing between Chris and his wife. Yeah, with my wife I would not have survived the bridge, never mind the chorus, in that performance. And poor Ms. Lipa would have been defenseless roadkill to make sure I got the point. Worth watching: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmdw1zrdEzk.
7. If I get in a car accident and you hear about it, I can tell you right now that the most likely reason, just book it, is that Sirius XM radio changed the station AGAIN on one of my presets. When the Billy Joel Channel suddenly becomes Spice Girls Radio a man of my generation has to take immediate action.
8. The NBA Finals often comes down to which team has the single best player. Not very complicated. There are exceptions, of course. In this years finals that man is a Maverick, not a Celtic. He wears jersey #77. Trouble ahead. I'd like to be wrong on this.
9. Only one TV series has impressed me over the last couple of years: Beef. Only one recently produced movie has impressed me: Past Lives. Both are odd, maybe even a bit slow. But EACH made me think. I suppose there’s another one or two, but they didn’t do enough for me to remember them, so they’re not listed here 😎.
10. I’ve given one Commencement Address in my life (no, it was not to a Kindergarten class!) but if I were giving one next week it would be simple: “Graduates, figure out what you’re going to do about Jesus.” I’d encourage them to Just Do It. Lean into the research, go through the steps, take on the mission. BUT don’t decide by NOT deciding (that is a decision itself).
Your final options will be simple but eternally defining. Jesus is either who he says he was, or he is not. There is no in-between. He is either God or he isn’t. He can’t be just a ‘good, moral teacher’ because, well, he claimed to be God and if that isn’t true then he’s a lunatic. (Um, lunatics can’t be good, moral teachers.) No larger question will ever define your life. Tackle it. Investigate it.
Oh, and show up every day, be on time, put in the work, tell the truth, and love people. Can’t forget those too. 💪
