Even if nobody asked…..
1. While helping move my daughter into her college apartment, I got into a conversation with the boys moving in next door. She quickly races over and nudges me back inside.
“Don’t talk to boys!”
(Didn’t I say that to her for years?)
I remind her that I’m conversational with people.
“Yeah, well, don’t do that. I don’t need them feeling like they can hang around here because they ‘met my dad.’”
Ah, deep thinking right there! A dad blind spot uncovered.
2. For those who lie sleepless over these kinds of things, let me settle this one for you: The largest U.S. city without a major professional sports team is Austin, Texas.
3. Fantasy baseball is the only place where I can spend forty-five minutes evaluating whether a grown man I have never met should be released from an imaginary team for another grown man I have never met – and walk away absolutely certain this was a productive use of my time.
4. We spend the first half of life collecting evidence that we matter – titles, money, houses, accomplishments, recognition. Then, if we’re fortunate, we discover the better question: Who matters because I was here? That feels like the scoreboard worth watching.
5. Putting a violin in a song is like putting a pocket square in your sport coat. It just makes the whole thing better.
6. The word BUT after an apology vanishes the apology.
7. I was forced to look for a new pair of sneakers this week. Not because my current NB 880s were worn out, but because my dear wife informed me that they scream, “Dean has an orthopedic appointment at 2:15.” $179 later, the appointment gets cancelled by a new pair of On Cloudswift 4's.
8. “For better or worse” often shows up as better only when things are worse.
9. To crave the RESULT but not crave the PROCESS is guaranteed to produce disappointment.
10. One underrated benefit of getting older is that you slowly stop needing every decision to be perfect. The restaurant can just be good. The shirt can be close enough. You can take the wrong exit. You can lose the argument. You can change your mind. A surprising amount of peace is hiding inside the words, “That’ll work.”
