Even if nobody asked…..
1. My wife had an uncle named Vinny. He was born on a kitchen table in an old farmhouse in Johnston, Rhode Island, and he lived in that same house all 85 years of his life. He never once drove a car. He walked everywhere.
One day he shook his head in disgust and said to me, “I got pulled over last night.”
I reminded him he didn’t drive.
He pressed on. “The cop thought I was walking crazy. He threw me in the back seat and told me he was taking me home. I gave him the wrong address.”
“What address did you give him?” I asked.
He looked at me like I was as dumb as I felt. “I had him drop me off across the street from the bar I was at all afternoon. That’ll teach him to pull me over for drunk walking.”
2. When I’m in communities in Florida, I keep wondering how close we are to Uber golf carts.
3. Vastly more people would rather be uncomfortable than uncertain. That’s a problem.
4. Don’t try to defend yourself from the words coming out of someone else’s mouth with words coming out of your own. It’s a fool’s errand.
5. Listen for the pain, not the blame, when someone is railing.
6. Be a verb, not a noun, in people’s lives.
7. Business 101: The first rule in decision making is that you don’t make one unless there is disagreement.
8. One line from my wife that I no longer fall for: “…..but it’s up to you.”
9. There’s a player in the 2026 NFL Draft named Ephesians Prysock. I wonder if he ever got a letter from Paul.
10. Vinny loved the Red Sox, but in a deeply cynical way. I took him to a Patriots Day game in 1998. The Sox lost, a lot to a little, to the Cleveland Indians.
He complained the entire ride home, swearing he’d “never come back to a game again.”
He was 82. It was his first game.
And he kept his word, passing before the Sox would win their first World Series since he was a toddler.😎
