Even if nobody asked, here's how I'd fix the Republic
1. One six-year term for president. This puts an end to spending half their term campaigning for the next term.
2. TRIPLE the size of the House of Representatives. Yup, we actually need way more congressmen. The country set today’s number when our population was a fraction of 2024’s total. People need to know their congressional representative. Increasing their number dilutes the power any ONE of them has. We should be able to get one of them on the phone or out for a coffee. That’s how it's supposed to work.
3. Congressional members serve from their HOME state. No office in Washington. Let them vote remotely. Keep them from being easy congregated targets for lobbyists and PAC’s, while keeping them in front of their constituents every day.
4. Term limits. Two terms for Senate, three terms for House. And to make it easy, handle it like the hockey helmet and face-mask rule changes years ago. Anyone currently in the Senate or House is exempt from term limits. Only new people are subject to it. (This is the only way they’d vote for it).
5. Supreme Court Justices are retired at age 78. No more “till death do us part” (that’s for marriage!). It also establishes the importance of a presidential election where a justice is about to age out.
There are many FUNCTIONAL changes needed but these are the STRUCTURAL ones, and that’s where you start when you’re aiming for change. The STRUCTURE.
I'm guessing these changes would be acceptable to both left and right. And ISN'T that a start?
